Jacques Marie Mage returns to two limited-edition frames that were among the first designs created for the original Stanley Kubrick by JMM collection. The new editions look to eyewear worn by Kubrick decades apart: first as a young staff photographer for Look magazine and later as the established filmmaker behind The Shining and Full Metal Jacket.
The 1948
The 1948 is directly inspired by glasses worn by a young Stanley Kubrick during his years at Look magazine, where his assignments included boxer Walter Cartier and figures such as Frank Sinatra.
The frame uses a compact, rounded shape with a pronounced brow and a keyhole-style bridge. Thick cured cellulose acetate gives the relatively restrained lens shape considerably more weight, while JMM’s signature arrowhead front pins, seven-barrel hinges and spur-shaped rivet heads provide the familiar metal detailing associated with the brand.
There is something appropriately photographic about the design. The 1948 is quiet by JMM standards, with much of its character coming from proportion, thickness and the subtle lift at the upper corners rather than exaggerated shaping.
The 1980
The 1980 moves forward more than three decades and into a completely different period of Kubrick’s career. Inspired by aviators Kubrick wore while working on The Shining in 1980 and Full Metal Jacket in 1987, the frame trades acetate for a broad beta-titanium construction and an unmistakably oversized aviator silhouette.
Its wide lenses are joined by a substantial double bridge, while the squared lower corners give the traditionally rounded aviator form a more architectural appearance. The thin titanium construction keeps the frame visually lighter.
The details remain restrained: hidden monoblock hinges, polished metal finishes, slender temples and acetate temple sleeves leave most of the visual emphasis on the scale and geometry of the front.
Limited Editions and Presentation
Each colorway is individually limited, with production across the eight editions ranging from 50 to 400 pairs.
The Stanley Kubrick presentation extends beyond the eyewear itself. Each frame arrives in a white linen monograph box with black embossed detailing, accompanied by a pebbled black leather envelope case, microfiber cleaning cloth, stainless steel screwdriver with burgundy enamel detailing and a letterpress authenticity card bearing the individual edition number.
JMM also includes a special booklet containing essays and archival photography examining Kubrick’s work and creative process, giving the presentation the character of an archival set as much as conventional eyewear packaging.
