Few musicians developed a visual identity as distinctive as Thelonious Monk. His sharply tailored suits, expressive hats and ever-changing eyewear became nearly as recognizable as the angular melodies, dissonance and carefully placed silences that defined his music. Jacques Marie Mage draws from that identity for the Misterioso, the first frame in its Thelonious Monk by JMM collection.

From Minton’s Playhouse to Misterioso

The frame’s name and design reference come from two different chapters of Monk’s career. Misterioso was recorded at the Five Spot Café in New York in August 1958. The eyewear, meanwhile, looks back to Monk’s appearances at Minton’s Playhouse, where he served as house pianist and helped develop the musical language that became bebop.

The Misterioso

The Misterioso uses a rounded-square lens shape with a wide fit, but the frame carries more softness than its overall width might suggest. The lower eyewires curve smoothly beneath the lenses, while a nearly continuous brow stretches across the top of the frame. A pronounced keyhole bridge opens the center, giving the broad front some visual separation without reducing its presence.

Laminated acetate sections introduce contrasting colors through the brow and temples, making the frame’s construction more visible without interrupting its silhouette. JMM’s signature arrowhead pins sit at the front, while custom Classic wirecores, seven-barrel hinges and spur-shaped rivet heads continue the metal detailing through the temples. Depending on the colorway, those components are finished in silver palladium or 18-karat dark gold.

Four Limited Editions

The Misterioso is offered in four colorways, each named for a part of Monk’s life or musical legacy.

Round About Midnight combines polished black acetate with gray horn accents and pale Dove lenses. The colorway references his celebrated composition “’Round Midnight” and is limited to 400 pairs.

Paris 1969, pairs black with Tokyo tortoise, bronze lenses and a limited production of 400 pairs. Taking its name from Monk’s December 1969 performance at Paris’ Salle Pleyel, later released as Paris 1969.

Minton, uses a warmer combination of burlwood and charcoal acetate with tan lenses. This colorway honors Minton’s Playhouse in Harlem, where Monk served as house pianist and helped shape the development of bebop. Minton is limited to only 200 pairs.

Sphere, combines dark Havana with clear beige, Sequoia lenses and only 200 pairs being made. Drawing from the musician’s full name: Thelonious Sphere Monk.

The Collector’s Box Set

Each Misterioso arrives in a custom monograph box wrapped in red linen and debossed with the MONK hallmark. Inside is JMM’s envelope eyewear case finished in custom red leather, along with a double-sided microfiber cloth featuring a photograph originally used on the cover of Monk’s 1964 album Monk.

The set also includes a letterpress authenticity card with collection details, craftsmen’s signatures and the frame’s handwritten limited-edition number.

While supplies last, each Misterioso is accompanied by an exclusive reissue of Monk Live in Paris, 1967, Volume One, a restored recording of Monk performing with Charlie Rouse, Larry Gales and Ben Riley during his 1967 European tour.
